Good thoughts Chad, if you don't mind I'll leave some cnemmots 1) At what point does an image become distracting? This all requires careful thought and prayer, but images can get overused, just like certain songs, topics, sermons, etc. The purpose of using an image (in my opinion of course) is to convey a thought, a word picture of sorts. Jesus used them all the time in the parables to relate truth to his hearers, using images that they could relate to.2) At what point are we manipulating an emotion or thought with the artwork we use? My view is not to manipulate emotion, but the sensitive and wise use of using art/music to speak to or awaken the human conscience to the truth of God. That's what Jesus did with the parables I believe. Truth carefully woven in imagery that speaks to the heart or conscience. 3) To what level do use the tools from our culture to help deliver the message of God’s word? I think any level of tools can be used effectively, but I also believe the lack of such tools can also create a quiet place where the tools are eliminated from the distraction equation. But just as tools can become the focus, the lack of tools can also become the focus and distract from the main purpose. When the sound and lights and music is perfect, it can easily transform from worship to entertainment. With careful and prayerful leadership we can prevent that, and I believe you do a good job of that. We could do an unplugged worship music service with acoustic guitars and percussion to relieve our dependence on technology which I think would be a refreshing change of pace. 4) What questions am I not asking with respects to imagery and worship? Our primary calling as believers is become worshippers of God. How can we do that? We can read about it, have seminars and conferences, but only actually in the doing of it can we become worshippers. What does it take to turn us from spectators into participants in this grand place of surrendered worshippers of Almighty God? How do we become a Holy people, set apart by God for this great calling? How do we recognize and eliminate those things that prevent us from being true worshippers of God? How can I learn how to delight in God, and make Him all that I could ever want or need? How can I learn how to pray meaningfully? I don't expect any one person to be able to answer these questions, they are just things I think about and where God is drawing me.
